How to Choose the Best Trackball Mouse
When talking about the best trackball mice, there are few features that make the real difference and separate the good from the bad, or at least help you choose which device you should pay your attention to, and which ones you should avoid.
Smooth trackball operation is the most important aspect of this type of device since the improper gritty feeling will completely ruin the whole user experience. For that reason, make sure that your desired mouse has that covered.
Also, have in mind that a larger ball means that you will need less rotation for a certain move. Therefore, it is advisable to go for bigger ones. Of course, don’t go into extremes and choose the largest trackball your hand can handle.
For the devices such as trackball mice, that are continuously used for long periods of time, it is essential that they provide enough comfort and an ergonomic design for the user. Not just because of the short-lasting discomfort, also because they can cause some serious health issues, mostly considering your wrists.
Similar to regular mice, more buttons usually mean better functionality, and the number of programmable buttons, more or less placed for personalization and creation of dedicated commands, can seriously impact your whole user experience and the trackball usability. In other words, although they are not essential, go for the device with as many buttons as possible.
When talking about trackball mouse, there are usually three types of connection: wireless (over the USB dongle), Bluetooth and wired one. Of course, the best trackball mouse will usually have more than just one connection type, which will allow for its simultaneous use on multiple devices. Have that in mind and if you own more than one device that can be controlled over the scroll ball mouse, definitely go for a more versatile trackball.

I have the Trackman and Ergo both serve niches some of these other options don’t tackle. The Trackman can be used along side a normal mouse for instance, because two mice is better than one and becomes second nature rather quickly. The Ergo feels like a normal mouse as in two buttons and a scroll wheel plus forward/backward keys, its ball is controlled with the thumb and unlike the other options its rather smaller. One thing often overlooked on the Ergo is the fact that its the only laser tracked ball mouse that is wireless on the market. The Ergo’s biggest negative is its small size, don’t be fooled by the images this thing is tiny but if you travel a lot that comes in handy. Its roughly the size of a small Razer or Steelseries Rival mouse.
The Perixx 520 works absolutely fine on my iMac. Perixx’s own software is Windows only but there are far better options anyway like SteerMouse.
